India has reopened negotiations to acquire Shinkansen E10 trains for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail project, targeting a launch in 2030 with services running at 320 km/h. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The corridor, developed using Japanese technology, is already under construction. Trials will start with Shinkansen E5 models manufactured by Hitachi Rail and Kawasaki Heavy Industries. Officials expect commercial operations to feature the next-generation E10 series.

Talks with Japanese suppliers stalled in 2024, so India announced a tender for designing local trains capable of reaching 250 km/h. The government also plans to build a domestic supply chain for components to strengthen its manufacturing base.

India Balances Local Development with Partnerships

Earlier this year, Japan agreed to provide one E5 and one E3 train free of charge in early 2026 for testing purposes. Meanwhile, Indian manufacturer BEML plans to trial its prototype on the route by the end of 2026, highlighting domestic ambitions.

Experts say securing E10 trains would boost India’s global standing in high-speed rail. The project promises to transform travel and deepen economic cooperation between India and Japan while fostering innovation in local rail technology.
