In the USA, plans are underway to launch autonomous hybrid railcars
20.06.2023
The project will be implemented by the startup GEGI in collaboration with the manufacturing company Bart, as reported by the railway magazine Railway Supply, citing Rollingstock.
The first 10 beta versions are planned to be released this summer at the Bart factory in Stockton, following the finalization of the railcars’ design.
They will be tested on the PVJR railway line in Washington state. Commercial production is expected to begin by 2029.
Developed under the brand Glīd, these battery-powered railcars will be connected to a semi-trailer or a container (using a coupling and a rear axle) and will have the ability to lift the cargo being transported.

It is claimed that they will be operated by operators from a command center and will be able to travel on railway tracks at speeds of up to 130 km/h.
A similar project is being implemented by another US startup, Parallel Systems. Their autonomous container transport railcars with a range of up to 800 km have been undergoing testing since 2022.
