In Seoul, the trial operation of a seatless subway car has begun
18.01.2024
The first of its kind was put into service on the busiest Line 4 of the South Korean capital last week, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
As part of the conversion, 40 seating places were removed from the cabin (leaving only 2), freeing up 12.6 square meters of space, thereby increasing the nominal passenger capacity from 160 to 200 individuals.

Additional handrails and handles were also installed.
During the year-long pilot project, it is planned to replace every fourth or seventh train car produced by local companies Hyundai Rotem and Daewoo Heavy Industries from 1990 to 2020 in a similar manner.
The expectation is that this will reduce train overcrowding levels from 193% to 153%.
The results will be evaluated for potential expansion of these cars to other lines.
However, witnesses note instances where passengers entering such a car promptly exited at the next stop to switch to a seat-equipped one.
