18.05.2025
Hyundai Rotem secured a $298 million contract to supply automated trainsets for a new subway line in Taichung, Taiwan, boosting mobility in the city of 2.8 million residents. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The Taichung Blue Line will span 24.78 kilometers and include 20 stations. It is the second of four planned subway routes that aim to transform urban transportation across the region.

Each automated trainset will consist of three aluminum-bodied cars and carry up to 530 passengers at a top speed of 80 km/h. The design reduces weight and improves energy efficiency.
Strong Presence in Subway Projects Across Asia
Hyundai Rotem’s success stems from previous subway projects in Taiwan, including deliveries to Taiwan Railways, the Kaohsiung Red Line, and Taipei Metro. These achievements built strong trust with local authorities.
A company spokesperson said: “A series of successful projects and positive evaluations in Taiwan helped us secure this contract. We are committed to delivering safe and reliable trains to Taichung.”
Subway Deal Reinforces Global Expansion Strategy
This contract adds momentum to Hyundai Rotem’s international expansion. In February, the company signed a $1.53 billion agreement to deliver double-decker electric trains to Morocco’s national railway.
In January, three additional locomotives arrived in Tanzania, expanding their fleet to four. These trains will operate on the standard gauge line connecting Dar es Salaam to the inland city of Morogoro.
By investing in efficient subway systems and advanced rolling stock, Hyundai Rotem continues to position itself as a global leader in urban rail transit technologies.
