Under the contract, the Korean manufacturer is committed to delivering 34 trams, which will be put into operation on the city’s second metro line between 2026 and 2028.

The H2 trams are equipped with an innovative hybrid traction system that includes batteries capable of regenerative energy storage, as well as hydrogen fuel cells.

The tram’s range on a single refuel is 200 kilometers, thanks to hydrogen storage tanks located at the top of the carriage.

To generate electricity, the tram uses a chemical reaction process where the air entering the fuel cells is purified of dust and other impurities.

As a result, the tram emits purified air, positively impacting the environmental situation.

According to the manufacturer, one such tram can purify 107.6 kilograms of air per hour of operation.

In the context of 1,000 such trams, this is equivalent to purifying the emissions of 4,000 diesel vehicles.

In addition to supplying the rolling stock, Hyundai Rotem will be responsible for installing signaling and traffic management systems on the new metro line.

The contract with the Daejeon city administration is valued at $201 million.

The development of the hydrogen tram began several years ago, and in the summer of 2023, Hyundai Rotem unveiled a working prototype at the Korea Railways & Logistics Fair in Busan.

The total cost of designing and manufacturing the tram was $31.9 million, of which $22 million was provided by the government.

Thus, Hyundai Rotem is making a significant step forward in the development of environmentally friendly urban transport, introducing technologies that not only reduce harmful emissions but also contribute to improving air quality in urban areas.
