The first Hyundai Rotem tram for Edmonton’s Valley Line West has arrived, and before entering service, it must undergo at least 2,000 kilometers of test runs. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Hyundai Rotem contract with Edmonton authorities
In 2021, Hyundai Rotem signed a $157.3 million contract to supply 46 low-floor, seven-section trams. They are being assembled at the company’s plant in Changwon, South Korea, with deliveries scheduled to be completed by 2027.

This project marks Hyundai Rotem’s first tram order for North America. For the company, it is a strategic step, as Edmonton is actively modernizing its transportation network and expanding its light rail transit system.
The trams are designed to operate in temperatures as low as –40 °C, which is essential for Alberta’s climate. Climate control systems maintain a comfortable interior, and accessibility features were improved based on feedback from residents after a full-scale mock-up was presented in 2023.
Hyundai Rotem and Valley Line development
The existing Valley Line Southeast spans 13 km and includes 11 stops. It opened in November 2023 and is served by 26 Alstom Flexity trams. The new western section, 14 km in length, will connect downtown Edmonton with the Lewis Farms area.
Construction began in 2022 and is expected to finish in 2028. City officials anticipate that Valley Line West will improve transport accessibility, reduce road congestion, and lower emissions.
The delivery of the first Hyundai Rotem tram to Edmonton is a key milestone in the Valley Line West project. It strengthens the company’s position as a supplier of modern urban transport and demonstrates its expertise in designing vehicles for harsh climates.
