This milestone makes Portugal the second country, after Spain, to permit the use of a hydrogen train.

Stadler Polska won the tender to supply trains to Bulgaria

Tests conducted from April 3 to 6 were crucial in determining the train’s readiness for commercial operation.

Portuguese energy company Iberdrola supplied the train with hydrogen, while refueling stations from the Dutch company Stellantis provided proper power.

Portuguese logistics operator Medway’s engineers operated the train during the trials.

This new mode of transportation has several advantages.

The train can operate on both hydrogen and electric power and has battery packs allowing autonomous movement for up to 70 kilometers without recharging. Its maximum speed is 140 km/h.

This train is based on a three-car Civia electric train, supplemented with new equipment.

The FCH2Rail program, which developed this train, involved eight participating companies, including Infrastructures of Portugal (IP), CAF, Adif, Renfe, German Aerospace Center (DLR), Toyota Motor Europe, Spanish National Hydrogen Center (CNH2), and Stemmann Technik.
