Hydrogen Locomotives in Sweden Set for 2027-2028 Introduction
Pesa, the leading Polish company, has announced its collaboration with Swedish operators Vate Rail and Hankavik to bring hydrogen locomotives to Sweden by 2027-2028, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

This partnership, sealed with a letter of intent, emphasizes the growing need for hydrogen technology in the transportation industry. Together, they will pave the way for introducing these revolutionary locomotives into Sweden’s railway system.

Building the Infrastructure for Hydrogen Locomotives
As part of their collaboration, Pesa, Vate Rail, and Hankavik will focus on building the infrastructure necessary for hydrogen refueling stations. And this move ensures that the new hydrogen-powered trains will have the support they need for smooth operations. So, with sustainable hydrogen production and fully functional H2 ecosystems, these locomotives will mark a significant shift toward eco-friendly rail transport.
Hydrogen Locomotives: The Future of Green Transport
The hydrogen locomotives from Pesa present an innovative solution for reducing carbon emissions. They offer an environmentally friendly option, especially when compared to traditional diesel engines. The Pesa SM42-6Dn, which has already made its debut as the first hydrogen locomotive in Europe, is a testament to this technology’s potential. Equipped with asynchronous motors of 180 kW each and two hydrogen cells from Ballard, the locomotive can move loads of up to 3,200 tons at speeds of 90 km/h.
Hankavik will oversee the integration of these trains into the Swedish market, while Vate Rail will manage their day-to-day operations. This joint effort opens the door for broader adoption of hydrogen technologies in rail transport, moving us toward a more sustainable and greener future for Sweden’s railways.
