Hydrogen Engines Transform Railways: CPKC Partners with Ballard

The Canadian company Ballard Power Systems signed a contract to supply hydrogen engines for CPKC. The agreement involves 98 engines, each providing 200 kW of power for the railway network. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Ballard began its partnership with CPKC in 2021 by delivering engines with a total capacity of 10 MW. These earlier deliveries helped create a foundation for further advancements in locomotive innovation.

Advancing Hydrogen Engines through Collaboration

In 2023, CPKC joined forces with CSX Corporation to form a joint venture for green transport. Their cooperation led to the modernization of locomotives to operate entirely on hydrogen systems.

The first modernized locomotive has successfully completed initial tests, validating its reliability. Additional testing phases will run through 2025, ensuring technology readiness for full-scale deployment.
