In August 2024, four hybrid Impuls 2 trains (36WEh), equipped to operate both from the overhead power supply and on diesel traction, began service on the route between Gdynia and Kartuzy.

These three-car trains, which meet the Stage V environmental standard, were acquired under a contract with the Pomeranian Voivodeship for 128 million PLN, equivalent to approximately 28 million euros.

Half of the project funding was provided by the European Union.

The new trains are designed for operation on complex routes where part of the track is not electrified.

On the section from Gdynia to Kościerzyna, where there is no overhead power supply, the trains use diesel traction and can reach speeds of up to 120 km/h. Once on electrified sections, the trains can accelerate to a maximum speed of 160 km/h. The transition between modes takes just one minute, significantly reducing travel time.

The Impuls 2 hybrid trains have already proven themselves in other regions of Poland, including Greater Poland, West Pomerania, Lower Silesia, Lubusz, and Łódź Voivodeships.

This type of rolling stock is becoming increasingly popular due to its versatility and environmental benefits, which are particularly important in the context of modern requirements for reducing carbon emissions and fuel savings.

Newag President Zbigniew Konieczek previously noted that there are plans to equip the trains with supercapacitors in the future.

These devices will reduce diesel consumption by 35%, making the operation of the trains even more economical and eco-friendly.

Thus, the introduction of Impuls 2 trains in the Pomeranian Voivodeship is an important step toward modernizing rail transport in Poland, contributing to increased efficiency and environmental sustainability in transportation.
