The terminal, called Adria Port, will function as an import/export platform for Hungary. It will be built on the site of the Aquila refinery that closed in the 1980s. The total investment is 200 million euros, 45 of which will be financed by the Italian Recovery and Resilience Plan. Construction is expected to take about two years, reports Railway Supply magazine, citing RailFreight.

The area of the site will be 34 hectares, it will be equipped with new berths with a length of 650 meters. The terminal will also have a rail link to the Aquilinia station, located 10 km from the center of the port. According to Peter Kiss-Parciu, head of the cross-border economic cooperation department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, this terminal will give Hungary access to the sea, which the country currently does not have directly within its borders.

The railway will actually be the protagonist of the new terminal. There are already six to eight daily trains between Trieste and Budapest, with more to come once the terminal is completed. Aquilinia station is also undergoing renovations. The station will soon be equipped with four tracks suitable for 750-meter trains that can carry 40-foot containers as well as mega trailers.

The new terminal marks a new chapter in relations between the two countries. Until now, Hungary has preferred to rely more on the port of Koper in Slovenia. As Zeno D’Agostino, president of the East Adriatic Ports Authority, noted, the project was supposed to take place in Koper, but Trieste managed to get the funds and therefore win the terminal.
