The tunneling goes from 116th St through to 125th street with an abox for a station planned at 125th st. Committed$500 million Reusing a partially constructed tunnel from the 1970s will save about this amount, minimizing costs for the project.
A pair of specialized 750-ton tunnel-boring machines with 22-foot drill heads will burrow between 35 and 120 feet beneath Second Avenue. Preparatory work would start in late 2025, followed by heavy construction in 2026 and actual tunnel boring in 2027.
Second Avenue Subway Good news for East Harlem
The $6.99 billion budget, which will be financed in part with congestion pricing revenue, shows saving more than $1.3 billion as well as strategic investments through value engineering and early utility relocations. The project is to be opened for service in September 2032.
Residents of East Harlem, 70 percent of whom are public-transportation dependent, will have three accessible subway stations at 106th, 116th and 125th Streets. The extension is projected to reduce travel time by up to 20 minutes.
Ridership will total approximately 110,000 people a day, and more than 70,000 jobs will be generated, with a 20 percent local hiring requirement for area residents.
Governor Kathy Hochul said this phase is what moves the project from years of promises to reality. She emphasized its importance as a way to enhance connectivity in East Harlem and drive economic activity.
The first phase, which opened in 2017, added service between 63rd Street and 96th Street, and served more than 130 million passengers, demonstrating the subway’s crucial role in urban mobility.
