How the Arctic Is Powering the Future of Railway Innovation?
06.11.2025
The Arctic region is soon going to become a hub for railway innovation as Norway and Sweden have started a project on their Ofotbanen and Malmbanan railway stretches, spanning a total of 473 kilometers, to test innovations.
This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The Arctic Shapes a Platform for Railway Technology Testing
“Arctic Test Arena” has been launched by the Norway Railway Directorate and its partners in Sweden, combining infrastructure on both sides of the border. Testing of trains, equipment, and digital solutions is made possible in adverse climatic conditions through this project.

Testing in the Arctic lasts one year, while testing in southern Europe lasts ten years, as, due to climatic conditions, flaws are quickly identified. Cold, snow, and climatic changes lead to more valid and comprehensive results.
Acting Director of Norwegian Railway Directorate Marit Ronning added that ‘the Arctic climate normally presents some challenges when it comes to operating railways, but this becomes an asset when testing technology, as they can then test its actual strength and reliability.’
The Arctic Strengthens Scientific Cooperation Between Norway and Sweden
Some of the participating organizations include, but are not limited to, Bane Nor, Norway’s Public Roads Administration, research institute Sintef Narvik, and Arctic University of Norway (UiT). There are expected to be a total of about 60 participants involved.
The testing site currently has projects such as digital monitoring of train operations, measurement of wheel profiles, and monitoring of rail deformation. Researchers are also evaluating the behavior of railway sleepers and rails below loads of up to 32.5 tons.
Thus, this project enhances scientific cooperation between Norway and Sweden and establishes a hub of excellence for railway innovation research in northern Europe. Consequently, research on sustainable transport and cold engineering occurs in the strategic region of the Arctic.
News on railway transport, industry, and railway technologies from Railway Supply that you might have missed:
What is the Arctic Test Arena?
It is an international project by Norway and Sweden for testing railway technologies in Arctic conditions, covering the Ofotbanen and Malmbanan lines.
Can testing in the Arctic be carried out year-round?
Yes. The region’s climate provides varied weather conditions, allowing for continuous testing throughout the year.
How does the Arctic influence railway technology development?
Extreme conditions reveal mechanical weaknesses faster, helping engineers refine solutions for reliable railway operations in cold climates.
