Honolulu Skyline improves access and travel efficiency

Honolulu Skyline Phase 2 added four new stations—Karapa, Lelepaua, Ahua, and Kahauiki—taking the route to 13 stations. These stations enhance connection strengths and uphold the long-haul transit vision for Honolulu.

The Lelepaua/Daniel K. Inouye International Airport Station provides direct connection to the airport with easy entry for both passengers and workers. An added express bus route to Waikiki adds increased connection of the rail with road networks.

Both these additions together alleviate traffic congestion and enable sustainable mobility. The project connects major employment hubs, residential neighborhoods, as well as tourist areas, with faster, cleaner modes of transportation.

Honolulu Skyline supports housing and urban development

The Honolulu Skyline encourages corridor-based transit-oriented development. Urban planners hope that there will be new residential and commercial developments around the stations because investment and renewal of communities are spurred by increased access.

HART and the City Department of Transportation Services are working towards creating walkable, connected neighborhoods. The plan supports the sustainability goals of the State of Hawaii as it tackles the State’s Statewide Housing Crisis.

Phase 3, which is set for completion by 2031, will expand the system to Ala Moana in six new stations. The expansion solidifies an integral, low-emissions transportation future for Honolulu’s vision.
