Hitachi Rail to Upgrade Hamburg–Berlin Line with Digital CCS
02.06.2025
Hitachi Rail will modernize a 200-kilometer stretch of the Hamburg–Berlin rail corridor, delivering advanced CCS systems between Paulinenaue and Schwanheide to enhance speed, control, and safety on this key high-speed route. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The contract from DB InfraGO covers the renewal of electronic interlocking systems, trackside components, train protection systems, power supply, axle counters, and indoor equipment. Hitachi Rail will also adjust track layouts for better operational flow.

Two new crossovers will be built in Zernitz and Vietznitz, while the continuous automatic train control system (LZB) will be upgraded to maintain top speeds of up to 230 km/h across the corridor.
Travel time between Hamburg and Berlin will remain at 90 minutes, a crucial factor for sustaining demand in long-distance passenger transport. Modern CCS technology will ensure high reliability and efficiency along the route.
Hitachi Rail Brings Next-Gen Control Systems to Germany
With the ESTW L90 platform, Hitachi Rail introduces a future-ready signalling system for one of the busiest corridors in the country. This technology strengthens DB’s digital infrastructure goals and supports European rail integration.
According to André Fritzsche, Project Manager at Hitachi Rail Germany, the company’s innovation is “a strategic step for modernizing Germany’s railway and enhancing the broader high-speed network across Europe.”
DB finalized contracts in May. Major works will begin in August and are set to last nine months, with completion expected in spring 2026.
Hitachi Rail Supports Germany’s Climate and Capacity Goals
The Hamburg–Berlin modernization is part of Deutsche Bahn’s national effort to upgrade high-performance corridors. These projects aim to decarbonize transport and expand network capacity while aligning with the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).
This digital transition represents a long-term investment in sustainability, regional mobility, and cross-border rail development.
