The delivery sits within an interlocking systems replacement programme valued at approximately 1.5 billion EUR.

SBB puts the total investment for the programme at 1.5 billion EUR, with activity planned over the next 20 years. During that period, around 80% of the existing interlocking systems are expected to be replaced as the network shifts toward modern digital signalling, as noted by Progressive Railroading.

Digital interlockings, Radio Block Centres and cab signalling

The agreement covers Hitachi Rail supplying the latest generation of its digital interlockings and Radio Block Centres. These elements are intended to support the full implementation of a Swiss nationwide cab signalling system, bringing key signalling functions into the driver’s cab.

EULYNX Object Controllers and predictive maintenance

Alongside that, the supplied solution aims to make use of smart Object Controllers based on the new EULYNX standard. The controllers are intended to operate and monitor points, signals and track sections, while gathering and reporting data on the status of assets currently in use—supporting predictive maintenance and asset monitoring.

The framework runs for an initial ten years, with an option to extend it three times for an additional five years each. It also includes 25 years of maintenance and support for the supplied systems, according to Railway Gazette International.

Kurt Sauerwein, Managing Director of Hitachi Rail in Switzerland, said: “Hitachi Rail will work with our partners to shape a new era of rail transport in Switzerland. The introduction of digital interlockings is a technological milestone that not only enhances the efficiency and sustainability of the Swiss rail network but also reinforces Switzerland’s position as an international leader in mobility. We look forward to contributing our expertise and innovation to this program.”
