Hitachi Rail has unveiled its first hybrid trains with traction batteries, as reported by the railway magazine Railway Supply.

Hybrid trains with traction batteries

These 12 trains, based on the Masaccio technological platform, are capable of receiving power from the overhead line, diesel engines, and traction battery packs. They have been developed for the Italian national passenger operator Trenitalia and will operate under the brand name Blues.

The trains were manufactured at the Hitachi Rail plant located in Pistoia, near Florence. By using traction batteries when running on non-electrified sections of the track, diesel fuel consumption is reduced by 50%.
