the 'ethical' life cycle of trains

The Japanese rolling stock manufacturer has announced a Social Product Declaration (SPD) enabling the tracking of the ‘ethical life cycles’ of its trains.

«NIBULON» is investing up to $12 million in modernization

This positions Hitachi Rail as the world’s first company capable of monitoring both the social and environmental impacts of its railway products.

The certification will assess the train’s impact on various factors, including end-of-life vehicle care, recycling into production, and supply chain considerations.

The SPD was developed after the company examined the ethical life cycle of its new Masaccio battery hybrid fleet.

Currently deployed throughout Italy, its ability to operate on diesel, electricity, and batteries has resulted in a 50% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions compared to other trains on the route.

Hitachi Rail aims to assure customers and operators that it, along with its supplier network, adheres to ethical and socially conscious labor standards.

The manufacturer has already showcased its achievements in its business reports, receiving the PAS 2080 standard for carbon emission reduction and accreditation for ‘world-leading’ eco-friendly design for HS2.

According to Hitachi, this ‘innovative solution’ will be utilized in the updated EuroMasaccio product, slated for operation by 2027.
