Hitachi Rail Invests in CBTC to Revolutionize Train Control

Hitachi Rail is investing $100 million in developing the advanced CBTC SelTrac G9 train control system. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The project is supported by a $5 million contribution from Ontario’s Invest Ontario agency. SelTrac G9 utilizes cutting-edge technologies, including artificial intelligence, 5G networks, and cloud and edge computing. These innovations aim to enhance railway system efficiency and reliability.

This initiative seeks to reduce operational costs for transport operators and lower the carbon footprint significantly. The technology also aims to improve passenger experience by optimizing service quality and operational processes. Hitachi Rail is focusing part of the investment on expanding its facility in Toronto, where 100 new jobs will be created. This expansion strengthens the company’s presence in the region and boosts local economic development.
The CBTC SelTrac system was originally developed by Thales, which Hitachi Rail acquired in May 2024. Currently, the system operates on over 100 metro and rail lines in 40 cities globally. The latest G9 version builds on the success of the previous G8 model, launched in 2021, offering enhanced performance and sustainability.
Hitachi Rail’s facilities in Canada employ approximately 1,200 workers, including specialists at the global center of excellence in Toronto. Established in 1974, the center specializes in urban transit train control systems. The company’s ongoing efforts underline its commitment to leveraging advanced technology for sustainable infrastructure improvements worldwide.
