Hitachi Rail has unveiled the new hybrid train Masaccio “Blues”

The new Masaccio “Blues” hybrid train is equipped with battery packs, specifically designed for the Italian operator Trenitalia, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
It is scheduled to enter service in the summer of 2024. Under the framework agreement between Hitachi Rail and Trenitalia, a total of 7 such trains will be supplied.
The new train continues the lineup of Masaccio “Blues” hybrid trains, which can utilize electricity, diesel, and batteries, reducing CO2 emissions by 83% compared to diesel-powered trains.
Previous models only reduced emissions by 50%.
The train has a speed of up to 160 km/h and an acceleration of 1.1 m/s², accommodating up to 300 passengers.
An innovative air conditioning system is also applied, regulating energy consumption based on wagon load. The delivery of new trains is carried out in accordance with the agreement signed between Hitachi Rail and Trenitalia in 2022.
A total of 135 Masaccio “Blues” hybrid trains will be supplied under this contract, with a total cost of €1.23 billion.
They are intended for operation on routes in various regions of Italy, including Tuscany, Lazio, Calabria, Sicily, Sardinia, Valle d’Aosta, and Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
