10.12.2024
Hitachi Rail has completed the first of 14 metro trainsets for Roma’s metro lines. These new trainsets promise improved efficiency, accessibility, and passenger comfort for the Italian capital’s residents. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Cutting-Edge Technology with Hitachi Rail
The new trainsets are part of a larger agreement established in December 2022. Under this deal, Hitachi Rail will supply 30 advanced metro trainsets, including 12 for Line B and two for Line A.

Each trainset, measuring 106 meters in length, features 24 doors on each side for seamless boarding. Designed for maximum speeds of 80 km/h, the trains can carry 1,204 passengers, with seating available for 204 individuals.
Key amenities include four dedicated wheelchair spaces and state-of-the-art air-conditioning systems. These enhancements reflect Hitachi Rail’s commitment to modernizing urban transit while prioritizing accessibility and comfort.
Sustainability and Efficiency Drive Innovation
Hitachi Rail’s advanced design reduces energy consumption by 10% compared to existing metro fleets. The lighter train body, weighing 5% less, and improved traction systems contribute to significant energy savings.
Eugenio Patanè, Roma’s Council Member for Transport, highlighted the benefits of these new trains. He noted that the updated fleet would lower average train age, improve service reliability, and support environmental sustainability.
A Milestone for Roma’s Public Transport
This first completed trainset represents a pivotal step in Roma’s metro modernization efforts. As more trainsets are delivered, residents will benefit from enhanced urban mobility and reduced congestion.
The collaboration between Roma and Hitachi Rail underscores a shared commitment to providing efficient and sustainable transit solutions for the future. With innovation at its core, this project is set to transform urban transport standards.
