Ajax has served various roles, from an industrious locomotive to a display at Train Story Rail Discovery Centre. Visitors on the Isle of Wight came to appreciate its iconic design, reminiscent of a bygone era of steam power.

Historic Steam Locomotive Finds a New Journey in the Midlands

Isle of Wight Steam Railway, which maintains a 13-strong collection of steam engines, decided a new location would better suit Ajax’s capabilities. Seeking an operational role, the railway found a suitable home for Ajax, which had become surplus to its own requirements.

Peter Taylor, chair of the railway, shared his excitement over Ajax’s move. He said, “We’re thrilled to have found a new home for Ajax where she’ll return to steam, delighting enthusiasts once again.”

Originally withdrawn from industrial service in 1968, Ajax was later bought by Henry Frampton-Jones. In 1972, he lent it to Isle of Wight Steam Railway, where it became an appreciated part of the fleet.

Ajax underwent a comprehensive overhaul, returning to service and sparking excitement among riders until its retirement in 2014. Since then, it has remained a popular display piece at Train Story.

This marks a final chance for Isle of Wight visitors to enjoy Ajax before its departure. Soon, a new audience in the Midlands will discover the charm and history of this remarkable steam locomotive.
