Originally launched in 1970, the Southerner connected Christchurch to Invercargill via Dunedin along the Main South Line. It quickly became a favorite for its scenic views and high comfort standards.

Operating for over three decades, the train was renowned for making Invercargill the southernmost passenger station in the world. It symbolized South Island rail travel until its retirement in 2002.

Now, KiwiRail is reviving the route as a one-off tourism event. Tracey Goodall, Executive General Manager of Passenger Services, confirmed strong interest in the limited return of this beloved journey.

“We’re thrilled by the response to ‘The Southerner Returns.’ It brings back special memories and honors our rail legacy,” said Goodall.

Southerner train revival sparks public excitement

Passengers can expect a mix of nostalgia and comfort, with large windows, scenic views, and onboard amenities designed to enhance the travel experience. Every detail pays tribute to the original Southerner.

Because of limited availability, KiwiRail recommends booking early to secure a seat. The demand reflects just how fondly this classic train is remembered across New Zealand.

Celebrating New Zealand’s classic train experience

This journey offers more than scenic beauty—it connects travelers to the rich history of rail in the South Island. It’s a meaningful way to experience the charm of long-distance train travel once again.

Storytelling elements will highlight the Southerner’s legacy, blending old traditions with modern upgrades. The ride aims to inspire both new and returning passengers with a taste of history on rails.
