The Wansford Road station, dismantled brick by brick, is being rebuilt at Railworld Wildlife Haven after plans to widen the A47 threatened its demolition.

Stan Bell, leading the project, expressed optimism that the community will support the effort. He stated, “We need public backing to complete this restoration.” Originally closing in 1929, the station has already had its outer shell and roof reassembled. The team now focuses on fitting out the interior, a critical step in the project’s completion.

Bell highlighted the importance of preserving the railway station as part of the region’s heritage. “Without restoration, buildings like this would be lost, and future generations would never fully appreciate the role of railways,” he said. While the project is progressing well, an additional £150,000 is necessary to finalize the restoration.

The Railway Station as a Gateway for Visitors

Once restored, the railway station will serve as an entry point to Railworld and the Nene Valley Railway. The station will also include a visitor center, making it an educational resource for railway enthusiasts and the general public. Brian Pearce, from Railworld, noted that the attraction is already drawing significant interest from children.

Preserving Peterborough’s Railway History

Michael Purcell, chairman of Nene Valley Railway, pointed out the vital role railways played in Peterborough’s growth. “Before the railway, Peterborough was a small town. The railways sparked industrial and population growth, shaping the city into what it is today,” he said.

The groups involved hope the restored railway station will provide an immersive experience for visitors to explore Peterborough’s railway legacy.
