Metropolitan Area Transport, the successor to Helsinki City Transport (HKL), has issued an invitation to participate in a 1.6 billion euro tender for the delivery of 63 new Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs), this is reported by the railway transport news portal, Railway Supply.

The introduction of these new trams aims to replace the fleet from the 1970s.

Helsinki’s tram network will expand, incorporating 63 new tram units that will align with the expanding city’s infrastructure.

The purchase agreement “takes effect upon signing” and will be in force for ten years to facilitate future LRV acquisitions.

A support agreement will be valid for 30 years after the expiration of the general warranty for the last delivered tram.

According to the tender process, the goal of this procurement is to acquire new trams that are appealing to Helsinki residents, highly accessible, and well-suited for the Helsinki metropolitan region.”
