21.01.2025
The Hamburg-Berlin rail route is set to undergo a groundbreaking renovation, introducing advanced infrastructure upgrades and 5G mobile connectivity for improved passenger experience. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Ambitious Upgrades for Hamburg-Berlin Rail Route
Deutsche Bahn has announced a massive overhaul of the Hamburg-Berlin rail route, aiming to modernize its infrastructure and improve travel efficiency. The project, scheduled from August 1, 2025, to April 30, 2026, will include significant technological upgrades. These improvements will replace 180 kilometers of track, 200 switches, and update control systems to enhance operational reliability.

The renovation will also rebuild 28 stations and install six transfer points, allowing faster trains to bypass slower ones. This comprehensive upgrade reflects Deutsche Bahn’s commitment to enhancing Germany’s rail network and meeting passenger expectations for reliability and punctuality.
5G Innovation Along the Hamburg-Berlin Rail Route
One of the key highlights of this project is the introduction of a 5G innovation line on the Hamburg-Berlin rail route. This state-of-the-art technology promises gigabit-speed mobile communication for travelers, revolutionizing connectivity during journeys.
Additionally, the installation of rail-specific radio masts (FRMCS) will ensure seamless communication for rail operations. These updates align with Deutsche Bahn’s broader goal to integrate advanced technology across its network, benefiting passengers and freight operators alike.
Long-Distance and Local Solutions During Construction
During the construction period, long-distance passenger trains will be rerouted via alternative corridors, with an average delay of 45 minutes. Freight trains will follow separate diversion routes to prevent congestion.
To maintain local services, Deutsche Bahn plans the largest replacement bus network in Germany. Up to 173 buses will operate on 26 routes, covering 86,000 kilometers daily and ensuring smooth travel for regional passengers.
The Hamburg-Berlin rail route renovation represents a significant step forward in modernizing German rail infrastructure. By combining innovative technology with comprehensive service plans, Deutsche Bahn aims to meet current and future demands effectively.
