The Long Island Rail Road has increased seating capacity at Grand Central Madison to meet growing demand. Initially, the mezzanine lacked any seating, but significant changes began in October 2024.

At that time, 28 seats were installed near the 47th Street entrance. The latest upgrade adds 14 seats at the 45th Street area and another 28 at 46th Street. These complement the main seating area on the Madison Concourse.
Shanifah Rieara, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s chief customer officer, said the LIRR listened to passenger requests. She noted that new seating in three mezzanine locations and the concourse waiting lounge improves comfort before boarding trains.
Grand Central Madison’s Role in LIRR Growth
Only ticketed passengers can use the aluminum benches, with a 90-minute limit to ensure availability for active travelers. This policy keeps spaces accessible and maintains an orderly flow in busy areas.
Recent MTA surveys show Grand Central Madison scoring 90% to 97% approval for signage, navigation, digital displays, safety, and lighting. Overall LIRR station satisfaction stands at 86%.
Since its January 2023 opening, the station has grown into a major hub serving about 70,000 riders daily. In July 2024, the LIRR set a post-pandemic weekday ridership record of 298,419 passengers, compared to a pre-pandemic weekday average of 316,692 in 2019.
These upgrades reflect the MTA’s broader strategy to enhance rider comfort and retain passenger loyalty. By offering better amenities, Grand Central Madison strengthens its position as a vital Midtown gateway and a key factor in the LIRR’s recovery and growth.
