Grain Transportation in Kazakhstan: Current Challenges and Future Plans for 2024
07.11.2024
Grain transportation in Kazakhstan faces significant disruptions, complicating planned shipment volumes for September and October. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
Kazakhstan Temir Zholy reports serious disruptions in grain transportation schedules, complicating planned shipment volumes. For September and October this year, the company planned to transport 4.3 million tons of new grain. However, the forecasted actual shipment volume is expected to reach only 2.2 million tons.

These significant discrepancies in shipment plans are attributed to several reasons stated by the national railway carrier. Specifically, the condition of loading resources at elevators and grain receiving points remains inadequate, creating logistical difficulties. Additionally, the access routes to elevators are in poor condition, which further affects transportation efficiency.
Another challenge is the lack of locomotives owned by a large portion of the operating elevators—nearly half of the elevators cannot independently ensure grain removal. As a result, despite considerable new crop volumes, the loading capacities of all elevators and grain receiving points are limited to 1–1.2 million tons per month.
Nevertheless, Kazakhstan Temir Zholy expresses readiness for intensified work in November to make up for shipment delays. For November, the company plans to transport over 2 million tons of new grain, with 1.7 million tons intended for export.
