The £140 million modernization began in January, focusing on new signalling systems, bridge improvements, and the installation of overhead line equipment. This work lays the groundwork for full electrification later in 2025.

Electric trains will not launch immediately, but ScotRail confirmed their rollout will follow once the infrastructure is ready. Until then, current diesel services will continue on the newly upgraded line.

Infrastructure Overhaul Supports Glasgow Railway Modernization

ScotRail’s service delivery director, Mark Ilderton, highlighted the benefits of the project. He said the improvements will create a more reliable Glasgow railway and thanked passengers for their patience during construction.

Network Rail also announced plans for a new East Kilbride station, a fully accessible Hairmyres station with two platforms, and a new footbridge at Busby. Giffnock and Clarkston stations will also see accessibility upgrades.

A replacement bus service operated during the four-month closure to ensure commuters retained essential travel options. Its conclusion marks a milestone in the larger electrification effort.

More Enhancements Ahead for Glasgow Railway Commuters

Work on the Glasgow railway remains on track for completion by December 2025. These upgrades form part of a broader strategy to deliver a cleaner, more efficient regional transport system.

New station entrances, enhanced platforms, and improved pedestrian infrastructure will provide long-term value for local communities. The return of direct rail service represents a critical step forward in that transformation.
