Germany to Pioneer Digital Automatic Couplers DAC in Freight Transport
13.08.2025
Digital automatic couplers DAC will begin commercial operation in Germany for the first time in the EU, as carrier WLE plans to test the technology on a pilot train by the end of 2025. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Pilot Project for Introducing Digital Automatic Couplers DAC
Germany is set to become the first EU member to introduce digital automatic couplers DAC into real-world operations. Westfälische Landes-Eisenbahn (WLE) manages a 120 km railway network and transports 1.4 million tons of cargo annually.
The company has ordered 30 CargoFlex couplers and two hybrid couplers compatible with DAC from Voith. Deliveries will be completed by autumn, and four couplers already received have been tested on two freight wagons since March.

WLE will equip 15 freight cars and one locomotive, forming a test train. The launch into commercial service is planned for late 2025. This stage will allow the company to assess both economic benefits and technical reliability.
Digital Automatic Couplers DAC as the Future EU Standard
The introduction of digital automatic couplers DAC has been discussed in the EU for several years. While the technology promises faster shunting and lower costs, some operators remain skeptical.
In summer 2024, the Voith module was designated as the preferred choice following four months of trials, which included both bench and operational testing. This decision paves the way for scaling DAC deployment across European railways.
The technology not only automates wagon coupling but also enables data transfer between them. This creates the foundation for intelligent control systems and increases staff safety by eliminating the need to work between wagons during coupling operations.
Germany is committed to digitizing its transport sector. If WLE’s pilot project delivers the expected results, DAC could become the standard for freight transport across the EU in the coming years.
FAQ
What are digital automatic couplers DAC?
They are automated devices for connecting railway cars, allowing faster shunting operations and enabling data exchange between trains.
When will digital automatic couplers DAC enter commercial service in Germany?
WLE’s pilot train is scheduled to launch by the end of 2025.
Can digital automatic couplers DAC be implemented across all EU countries?
Technically yes, but the decision depends on investments, infrastructure readiness, and the outcomes of current pilot projects.
