FTA guidance for transit during major events explained

Released on Dec. 5, the downloadable document is meant to help agencies that have to move large crowds during high-profile occasions.

According to the FTA, the Major Event Playbook lays out the main points public transportation agencies should keep in mind when they plan service for major events in their service areas.

It walks agencies through reviewing existing capacity, spotting gaps and deciding when they need supplemental transit services. Industry associations and private-sector firms may already offer advice on everyday operational good practice, but the FTA notes that far fewer materials address regulatory requirements, particularly safety, security and accessibility standards.

As Progressive Railroading reports, the playbook is intended to close this gap and give agencies a structured way to judge how prepared they are.

The FTA also points out that, over the next 10 years, the United States will host major international sporting events, including the 2026 Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup, the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games and celebrations of the nation’s 250th anniversary.

In the opening letter to the “Major Event Playbook”, FTA Administrator Marcus Molinaro writes that transit must be treated as a central part of these events rather than as an afterthought, stating that “for these events to be a success, transit must be the game plan, not the backup plan.”
