FS Group has announced a tender for constructing the Santomarco Tunnel to modernize Italy’s railway system. The project enhances connections between Salerno and Reggio Calabria, improving transport efficiency. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The tender, valued at over €1.6 billion, highlights the scale and importance of the work. The winning bidder must deliver a 22 km double-track line between Paola and Cosenza.

Seventeen kilometers of the route will be underground through the Santomarco Tunnel, ensuring efficiency. The remaining five kilometers will be above ground, providing flexibility and diverse infrastructure.

In addition to the tunnel, the project includes a new railway station in Cosenza. It also involves constructing essential infrastructure to support modern and safe railway operations.

The Salerno–Reggio Calabria route is divided into multiple phases to streamline construction efforts. Work on Lot 1a (Battipaglia-Romagnano) and Lot 1b/1c (Romagnano-Praia) is currently progressing.

Construction activities on Lot 2 (Praia-Paola) are also underway, following the planned schedule. The entire project will increase line capacity, benefiting passengers and freight transportation.
