Frecciarossa is undergoing modernization to expand its routes in Germany and Austria. Italian operator Trenitalia is upgrading its fleet to enhance safety and comply with European standards.

Frecciarossa Train Modernization for New Routes
A total of nine trains are scheduled for upgrades, with the first already sent to the Alstom plant. Specialists are integrating new safety systems and installing pantographs compatible with the 15 kV 16.7 Hz power grid.
Additionally, one train was recently modernized at the Firenze Osmannoro facility. As part of the upgrade, the bogie was replaced, and the braking system was adapted to fully meet German railway standards.
Frecciarossa Network Expansion
Since 2013, Hitachi Rail Italy has been manufacturing ETR1000 trains, producing 49 units so far. Until 2021, they were assembled at the Vado Ligure plant, but after Alstom’s acquisition, production was discontinued.
The upgraded trains will allow Frecciarossa to expand its network and offer passengers more convenient international travel. Now, comfortable journeys will be more accessible between Italy, Austria, and Germany.
