The trains will stop at major hubs such as Innsbruck, Bolzano, and Verona, and also in Florence and Bologna on the Rome route. This service will improve access to key European cities.
Frecciarossa 1000: Expanding the Network Across the EU
According to the agreement between Trenitalia, DB, and ÖBB, new direct routes will launch between Milan and Berlin, and Naples and Berlin by 2028.
Once the Brenner Base Tunnel opens at the end of 2032, travel time along these routes is expected to drop by approximately one hour, boosting rail competitiveness.
Frecciarossa 1000: EU Support and Train Adaptation
The initiative is part of a pilot program for cross-border rail supported by the European Commission. It ranks among the top ten actions to remove barriers in the international rail market.
The Frecciarossa 1000 trains, with a capacity of 462 seats, have been in successful operation in Italy since 2015. Hitachi Rail and Alstom are adapting them to meet the technical standards of German and Austrian railways.
Test runs will begin after adaptation, followed by certification for full operation in all three countries. The trains are already certified in Italy, France, and Spain.
Frecciarossa is considered one of the most advanced and comfortable high-speed trains in Europe, and its expansion into international routes will enhance the appeal of rail travel across the continent.
