They are scheduled to operate them not just on domestic flights throughout Italy but also on longhaul international services operating into France, Germany, Spain, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Belgium.
The preliminary trains started commercial service in late September after intensive trials that began in autumn 2024. This milestone is behind Trenitalia’s vision for growing internationally, reinforcing Italy’s prominence on the European highspeed transport market landscape.
The new generation provides enhanced energy efficiency and sustainability. The new generation saves energy with its improved traction system, which lowers power consumption, while the Energy Measurement System (EMS), which provides real-time usage, supervises consumption. This way, Trenitalia saves on operating costs and reduces carbon footprint, helping meet its environmental objectives.
Frecciarossa 1000 combines innovation and sustainability
The new train is 200 meters long, comprising eight cars, and has a top speed of up to 360 km/h, but is operated at a top speed of 300 km/h.
Multi-system signalling permits trouble-free working between several European railways.
The recycling rate is 97.1%, beating the old generation by 2.7%. This proves Italy’s high attention on circular manufacturing and environmental responsibility.
Manufacturing of Frecciarossa 1000 occurs at Hitachi Rail manufacturing facilities at Naples and Pistoia, bolstering industrial capacity of Italy while creating new employment opportunities.
Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS), parent company of Trenitalia, inked a €1.3 billion ($1.39 billion) deal with Hitachi Rail in October 2023, with an option for 10 more sets until 2029.
Frecciarossa 1000 represents IT technological advancement, blending efficiency, design, and safety.
The construction mirrors the country’s focus on sustainable transport and innovation for current transport.
