Finland Seeks EU Integration Through Railway Reform

Finland plans to modernize its national railway network, which exceeds 9,200 km in length, by abandoning the 1524 mm gauge. This will simplify cross-border routes with Norway and Sweden and improve national defense logistics.

According to Transport and Communications Minister Lulu Ranne, the country is ready for large-scale reforms. The project involves a complete infrastructure overhaul that will require substantial investment.

EU to Co-Fund Finland’s Railway Conversion

The European Union could cover up to 50% of planning costs and up to 30% of construction expenses. At current exchange rates, this could save Finland millions of dollars.

In addition to technical aspects, the government emphasizes the importance of coordination with neighboring countries. Adopting the 1435 mm gauge aligns with TEN‑T regulations and strengthens regional cooperation.

Finland is making a decisive move to boost its logistical resilience and economic integration by adapting its rail network to meet future challenges and EU requirements.
