An additional €30 million will be provided by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Another €60.5 million will come as a grant under the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF) initiative. The agreement was signed on April 8, 2025, in Tirana.

The section of the railway line is part of the Trans-European Corridor VIII, connecting the ports of Southern Italy with the Balkans. Thanks to modernization, Albania will strengthen its logistical position in the region.

New Projects in Albania Boost Railway Industry Growth

The financing will be used for a complete overhaul of the infrastructure, including tracks, bridges, and signaling systems. The updated line will reduce travel time and improve the reliability of transportation.

In parallel, the bank is supporting the modernization of a 120 km railway line between Vorë and Hani i Hotit at the border with Montenegro. The project includes technical consultations provided through the partnership with JASPERS.

Thus, the EIB and its partners are promoting the accelerated development of the railway sector. This opens up new economic opportunities and strengthens Albania’s integration into European logistics chains.
