02.11.2024
The fatal railway station roof collapse in Novi Sad, Serbia, has sparked an urgent investigation. This was reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Fourteen people lost their lives, including two children, with three others injured in the tragic event.
Rescue Efforts and Initial Response
Serbian authorities launched the investigation after the fatal railway station roof collapse on a clear day. Rescuers worked through the night with heavy equipment to retrieve the victims, whose lives were cut short in this avoidable tragedy. Located 70 kilometers from Belgrade, the station had recently undergone a $16 million (€16 million) renovation, finalized just a few months ago. Officials now aim to understand the cause of the disaster and whether recent repairs could be to blame.
Government Actions and Accountability
Following the fatal railway station roof collapse, Transport Minister Goran Vesic and Novi Sad prosecutors began inquiries involving the state Traffic Institute, Serbian Railways, and the Chinese firm behind renovations. Minister Vesic said authorities will examine quality controls and verify accountability for each organization involved, emphasizing the importance of thorough oversight. Prosecutors have requested building documents and summoned 20 people, including ministry and railway officials, for questioning on Saturday.
Interior Minister Ivica Dacic assured citizens that every decision-maker will be scrutinized as officials ensure nothing is overlooked. Citizens mourned the tragedy, uniting around the station, laying flowers, and lighting candles as workers cleared rubble from the accident site.
National Day of Mourning and Public Response
Serbia declared a national day of mourning in remembrance of the 14 lives lost in the tragic event. Citizens gathered at the accident site, leaving tributes, toys, and candles for the victims, creating a somber display of unity. This tragedy has led to calls for reforms, as citizens demand increased safety measures and accountability in future infrastructure projects.
The Serbian opposition used this incident to demand accountability from President Aleksandar Vucic’s administration, criticizing widespread corruption and mismanagement they say contributed to this tragedy. While Vucic denied the accusations, he vowed strict consequences for those at fault, promising justice and urging public trust in the government’s response.
In a national address, President Vucic expressed sorrow over the tragedy and committed to identifying those responsible. He emphasized that Serbia’s leaders will ensure accountability to prevent similar incidents in the future, signaling a renewed focus on public safety and integrity in infrastructure projects.
This disaster underscores the need for stronger oversight, accountability, and quality controls in Serbia’s public works. Citizens and officials alike hope the investigation will lead to improvements that prevent such tragedies and honor the memories of those lost.
