Eurostar Calls for UK Rail Strategy as Competition Intensifies
23.07.2025
Eurostar urges the UK government to adopt a credible long-term rail strategy, warning that failure to act decisively could leave Britain behind European competitors as sustainable travel demand surges across the continent. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.
The company cautions that letting rivals squeeze into existing facilities without a proper plan could jeopardize major investments. Eurostar insists that rushed decisions could derail future growth and harm service reliability.

Eurostar Seeks Government Support for Expansion
Eurostar is finalizing an order for 50 high-speed trains to expand its fleet and introduce direct routes to Frankfurt and Geneva. Meanwhile, competitors such as Virgin Group, Gemini Trains, and a joint venture of FS Italiane and Evolyn are aiming to break its monopoly.

However, all players face a critical obstacle: maintenance space. The only active depot, Temple Mills in East London, is already at full capacity. Eurostar plans to invest €80 million ($87 million) to secure its own expansion needs.
Eurostar Warns of Risks Without New Infrastructure
While the ORR believes more space exists and has invited applications, Eurostar argues that sharing the depot could disrupt operations and reduce customer satisfaction. It questions whether extra capacity can be delivered without major investment.
The company highlights rising demand, noting a 5% increase in passenger numbers last year to 19.5 million. Gareth Williams, Eurostar’s general secretary, says the UK must seize this “incredible opportunity” to boost international rail and avoid falling behind Europe.
Williams emphasizes that Eurostar’s plans are funded and already underway, but stresses the need for a clear government strategy for new depots—either through repurposing or building from scratch. The ORR’s decision on sharing depot space is expected in October, shaping the future of Channel Tunnel competition.
