Europe Expands Its High-Speed Railways Network
05.08.2025
Europe is preparing to implement a large-scale project in which high-speed railways will connect 39 cities across 22 countries by 2040, including the UK, Turkey, and Ukraine. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Integrating High-Speed Railways into the European Network
The analytical center 21st Europe has proposed a metro-style concept designed to integrate seamlessly with the existing rail infrastructure. This approach allows the rollout to proceed rapidly without requiring a complete overhaul of the current network.

The European Union supports the initiative because it aligns with core EU objectives: strengthening cross-border mobility, reducing CO₂ emissions, and building a unified transport system. High-speed railways serve as a tool for economic growth and environmental sustainability.
In late July, the European Investment Bank allocated €875 million for the construction of a high-speed line in Portugal. Additionally, the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) approved €1.2 billion in funding for the Rail Baltica project through 2027.
High-Speed Railways as a Strategic Priority for the EU
A line between Spain and Portugal is expected to open by 2030 and has become a key focus for the European Commission. Poland is building its own national high-speed network, which will also connect to the Czech Republic. Although the UK’s HS2 project is facing setbacks, the EU aims to triple the passenger flow between the island and mainland Europe.
Despite financial and technical challenges, Europe remains committed to expanding high-speed railways. These initiatives require substantial investment but offer long-term benefits in sustainable development and regional integration.
