EU supports transport blockade of Russia and Belarus
11.04.2022
The European Union introduces the fifth package of sanctions against the aggressor country and its henchman – the Russian Federation and Belarus.
This was stated by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, reports Railway Supply magazine with reference to the press service of the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine.
In particular, a ban is introduced:
“These decisions mean almost complete trade isolation of the occupier, who, despite anti-human actions in Ukraine, could still work on European markets. Now this will not happen, because the road, sea and air routes are closed. Already in the short term, we will be able to observe the large-scale negative impact of new sanctions on the economy of the Russian Federation and Belarus. I want to thank the entire team of the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine for the high-quality international communication work, as well as my colleagues, transport ministers from the EU countries, who pushed these sanctions at their level. The world is increasingly rallying against a terrorist country,” said the Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine Oleksandr Kubrakov.
In addition to sanctions on the operation of the logistics system, the package includes a ban on coal imports from the Russian Federation in the amount of 4 billion euros per year, a complete ban on transactions with four key Russian banks, subsequent export bans in the amount of 10 billion euros in certain industries (advanced semiconductors, machinery and (transport equipment), new import bans in the amount of 5.5 billion euros, as well as targeted measures – a ban on the participation of Russian companies in public procurement in the EU and the exclusion of any financial support for Russian state bodies.
Poland and the Baltic countries have previously called for stopping motor transport links with the aggressor country.
The question of the complete cessation of railway communication has not yet been raised. However, sanctions and restrictions by Ukraine’s partner states continue.
