Etihad Rail to Service COSCO’s Container Terminal at Abu Dhabi Port

A significant event in the transportation sector of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) occurred with the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Etihad Rail and COSCO SHIPPING Ports, this is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

This memorandum entails the use of the UAE’s railway network for container exchange with logistics hubs and industrial zones across the country.

Etihad Rail began freight operations in 2023 and has already deployed a network of 11 terminals in strategically important locations, such as the seaports of Ruwais, Jebel Ali, and Fujairah, as well as key inland areas.

This has significantly enhanced the efficiency and speed of freight transportation within the country and improved the accessibility of various UAE regions.

The COSCO SHIPPING Ports container terminal at Khalifa Port, the largest in the region, commenced operations in November 2021.

It covers an area of 27.5 hectares and has a handling capacity of 2.5 million TEU per year.

There are plans to increase this capacity to 3.5 million TEU, further enhancing its significance in the region’s logistics infrastructure.

The cooperation between Etihad Rail and COSCO SHIPPING Ports represents an important step in the development of the UAE’s transport infrastructure.

It aims to improve logistical capabilities and optimize the cargo transportation process.
