After the “trade visa-free regime” ends on June 5, the EU plans to introduce transitional measures to maintain favorable export conditions for Ukraine and prevent a return to restrictions.

The European Commission confirmed it does not intend to extend the autonomous trade measures beyond June 5. Instead, Brussels will launch a revision of the Ukraine–EU free trade zone agreement.

According to Commission spokesperson Olof Gill, the main focus is reviewing the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA), which should ensure long-term stability for businesses on both sides.

EU supports trade revision to ensure market stability

The EU emphasizes that new regulations will consider sensitive sectors, especially agriculture. This is crucial for balancing support for Ukraine with the protection of the EU’s internal market.

Gill noted that improving the DCFTA will strengthen Ukraine’s prospects for European integration. Transitional mechanisms will also help avoid abrupt disruptions to exports.

EU prepares to implement transitional mechanisms

Due to the risk of delays in negotiations, the EU is already discussing temporary solutions with Ukraine. These measures would help ensure trade continuity beyond June 5.

It’s worth noting that the European Parliament previously extended the duty-free regime for Ukrainian steel and iron for another three years, reinforcing the EU’s economic support.
