ERTMS Implementation in Italy to Accelerate Railway Digitalization
28.10.2025
The ERTMS system is set to form the backbone of the digital revolution underway in Italy’s railways as Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS) aims to implement it countrywide by the year 2040, allocating €20 billion for new technologies and growth.
This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

How ERTMS Will Transform Italy’s Transport System?
The FS improvements include modernization of ‘key routes’ to meet European rail standards. The project includes all railways within the ‘Core Extended Transport Corridors’ and aims to improve speed, accuracy, and security of operations.

The solution will be applied to 382 Trenitalia train sets and 60 FS Logistixlocomotives. After the modernization of the system, rail transport will be made more efficient and effective as the new system of ERTMS enables monitoring of train operations from a central point. In addition, the system reduces train maintenance costs.
ERTMS and FS Transition Toward Green Energy
FS focuses not only on digital transformation but also on environmental sustainability. The company has created a dedicated subsidiary, FS Energy, to develop solar power plants and purchase electricity from renewable sources. This approach reduces CO₂ emissions and increases transport energy efficiency.
As an aside, Italy increased FS’s global reach. In 2024, the group made a $1 billion commitment to build a high-speed line connecting Paris to London through the Channel Tunnel. The new service should begin operations in 2029. In Greece, FS Group and Hellenic Train plan to invest an additional $760 million.
Such measures enhance the reputation of FS as a leader in the rail transport industry in Europe. Hence, the adoption of the ERTMS system not only marks an advancement but also the creation of a transport system in Europe.
