According to the contract, Arriva will operate bus and railway routes in the Achterhoek and Rivierenland regions. The contract term is 10 years, but it can be extended until 2042 if all options are exercised.

Arriva has been active in the region since 2010, operating bus routes in Achterhoek and railway lines since 2012. The new contract will allow Arriva to significantly expand its presence by offering more routes.

A key feature of the new agreement is the focus on environmental sustainability. Arriva plans to replace its existing fleet of 100 buses with electric vehicles to achieve emission reduction goals.

In addition, the company will continue to operate its hydrogen buses, supporting the transition to greener transportation. Arriva will also upgrade its train fleet to improve passenger comfort and energy efficiency.

Introduction of Environmentally Friendly Railway Routes in 2025

Starting in 2025, nine new trains will be added to the routes, with four more expected by 2028. This will meet the growing demand for rail services between Arnhem and Doetinchem.

Anne Hettinga, Managing Director of Arriva Netherlands, expressed her excitement about the signed contract. She emphasized that the long-term agreement enables reliable investment and expansion of operations, benefiting passengers.

Arriva plans to help local authorities achieve their environmental goals by creating a sustainable transport system. All new routes will be marked in the characteristic purple and green colors of the region.

This contract marks a new chapter in the development of public transportation in Gelderland. Arriva is ready to play a key role in achieving the region’s sustainable transportation infrastructure goals.
