The Yonge North Subway Extension advanced as Metrolinx awarded a $1.4B contract for its tunneling phase to the North End Connectors consortium. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The project includes 6.3 kilometers of twin tunnels stretching from Finch Station to just south of Langstaff Road in Markham. This section forms part of the broader 8-kilometer Yonge North Subway Extension, which will later continue at surface level.

Design, construction, and financing are being executed under a Design-Build-Finance model. Preliminary work is underway, and major construction will begin once the design phase is finalized.
North End Connectors brings together leading firms. Aecon Infrastructure Management Inc., FCC Canada Ltd., and Ghella Canada Ltd. will lead construction. EXP Services Inc. and TYPSA Inc. handle the design, while financial support comes from National Bank Financial and others.
Yonge North Subway Extension: Technical Details and Impact
The tunneling route runs beneath Yonge Street, then curves east under Bay Thorn Drive before stopping south of Langstaff Road. Crews will build launch and extraction shafts, install station and emergency exit headwalls, and provide excavation support throughout the tunnel path.
The contract also covers procurement and installation of tunnel boring machines (TBMs) and precast concrete liners. These components will enhance efficiency and safety during underground construction.
Because this project operates under Infrastructure Ontario’s public-private partnership framework, a third-party fairness advisor ensured transparency during procurement. And by extending Line 1, the extension will reduce congestion, improve transit reliability, and support future population growth in York Region.
