The United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) introduced a vibrant six-stamp series celebrating World Sustainable Transport Day on November 26. This annual observance underscores the vital role of sustainable transport in advancing economic growth, social well-being, and international collaboration. Celebrating World Sustainable Transport Day with High-Speed Rail Innovations
This year’s event also commemorates the 60th anniversary of the iconic Tokaido Shinkansen, the world’s first high-speed train. Launched on October 1, 1964, the “bullet train” revolutionized travel between Tokyo and Osaka ahead of the Tokyo Olympics. Highlighting transport’s global impact, the initiative emphasizes reducing carbon footprints while enhancing mobility.

Decisions about transport modes—from cars to bicycles—affect carbon emissions and environmental sustainability. Encouraging inclusive and eco-friendly transportation fosters economic progress, mitigates harm, and enhances quality of life globally.
World Sustainable Transport Day and the Featured Stamps
British artist Tom Connell designed the stamps, showcasing remarkable high-speed rail systems worldwide. Each design pays homage to a landmark train and its country of origin:
- 73¢ – JR Shinkansen, Japan (endorsed by Japan Central Railway Company)
- $1.65 – Amtrak Acela, United States
- CHF 1.20 – ONCF Al Boraq, Morocco
- CHF 1.90 – CR Fuxing, China
- €0.95 – SNCF Voyageurs TGV INOUI, France
- €1.20 – DB ICE, Germany
The stamps are available online at www.unstamps.org and in UNPA shops located in New York, Vienna, and Geneva. These stamps, suitable for mailing, offer collectors and enthusiasts a tangible piece of transport history.
