WMATA Expands Automatic Train Operations to More Metro Lines
22.05.2025
Starting May 23, WMATA will launch automatic train operations on its Green and Yellow lines after months of system tests and safety reviews. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

The ATO system will manage speed, acceleration, and braking using equipment between the tracks to improve ride quality, reduce delays, and boost safety. Operators will remain in the cab to ensure onboard safety and monitor track conditions.

WMATA Implements ATO to Improve Safety and Reliability
With ATO handling core train functions, operators can focus on monitoring surroundings and managing passenger boarding more effectively. This allows for faster decision-making and improved incident response.
However, WMATA will suspend ATO during adverse weather, single-tracking, or when track workers are present. In these cases, manual control will remain in effect to maintain full operational awareness.
WMATA Builds on Red Line ATO Success
In December, the agency introduced ATO on the Red Line, cutting travel times by up to eight minutes. Since then, no safety incidents or red signal violations have occurred on automated trains.
WMATA views this expansion as part of its broader modernization strategy. By increasing automation, the transit system can offer more reliable service and better customer experiences across the region.
As technology enhances core operations, the agency reinforces its role as a leader in safe and efficient public transportation. WMATA’s continued investments aim to shape the future of urban mobility in Washington, D.C.
