WMATA Expands Automatic Train Operations to More Lines
30.05.2025
WMATA has officially launched Automatic Train Operations on the Green and Yellow lines, continuing its network upgrade after successfully introducing the system on the Red Line in December 2024. This is reported by the railway transport news portal Railway Supply.

Train operators will remain in the cab, focusing on safety, door control, and track conditions while ATO manages speed, braking, and acceleration. This balance improves oversight and operational quality.

Since ATO began on the Red Line, travel times have decreased by eight minutes with no red signal violations or safety concerns reported. That performance helped justify the latest expansion.
Automatic Train Operations Improve Safety and Efficiency
The new system helps streamline operations while keeping operators alert to their environment. Passengers benefit from more consistent service and reduced travel interruptions.
However, ATO isn’t used during heavy weather, when track workers are present, or when trains operate in single-track mode. Manual control remains essential in those situations.
Automatic Train Operations Support WMATA’s Modernization Plan
WMATA intends to roll out ATO across more lines in the future. This move aligns with its broader vision to modernize the network and enhance the overall passenger experience.
By pairing automation with trained human oversight, WMATA boosts safety without losing control. And by reducing operator workload, it allows for greater focus on onboard and trackside awareness.
The authority views this technology as a long-term investment in reliability and service quality. And with proven success already on the Red Line, the momentum for expansion continues to build.
