Wabtec’s Strategic Expansion in Guinea’s Railway Sector

This development follows a recent locomotive order from SimFer, a Rio Tinto joint venture, further supporting Simandou’s growing rail infrastructure. Together, these agreements exceed $500 million, marking one of Wabtec’s largest global projects in five years.

“Simandou is the world’s largest untapped iron ore deposit, offering Guinea a transformative economic opportunity,” said Wabtec’s Regional Vice President of Sub-Saharan Africa, Mpilo Dlamini. “Beyond supplying advanced locomotives, we are committed to fostering local employment and sustainable railway operations.”

Wabtec Locomotives to Enhance Simandou Rail Infrastructure

The ES43ACmi locomotive features a 4,500HP Evolution Series engine, delivering exceptional efficiency in high-temperature environments. Designed for durability, it meets UIC 3a and U.S. EPA Tier 3 emissions standards, aligning with international environmental regulations. Deliveries will begin in 2025.

“This agreement marks a key milestone for the Simandou project,” said WCS CEO Zhang Cheng. “As we continue building the TransGuinéen railway, these locomotives will uphold the highest operational standards.”

The 600-kilometer TransGuinéen Railway is under construction to connect the Simandou mine with the Port of Morebaya. This vital infrastructure will significantly boost Guinea’s iron ore export capacity and strengthen its role in global trade.

The Simandou mountain range, located in southeastern Guinea, holds an estimated 1.8 billion tonnes of high-grade iron ore reserves. WCS is leading the development of Blocks #1 and #2, ensuring long-term economic benefits for Guinea’s industrial sector.
